When his military school was relocated to Castle Solitude, Schiller too came to Stuttgart to finish his studies in jurisprudence and medicine that he had started in 1774. After he had completed his studies on the second attempt, the young poet was given the job of army doctor. In order to get away from this life, he fled the city in 1782 and finally decided on a career as a writer.
The cultural city of Stuttgart offers musical and theatre festivals, eighteen permanent arenas and twenty-four free ensembles. This cultural aspect of the „Year of Schiller“ programme is assured by a host of activities ranging from readings, recitals and exhibitions through to concerts and contemporary examinations of the classical writer's life and works.
