"Mannheim at last!“ The liberal and intellectual climate of this city paved the way for Friedrich Schiller's ascension after 1782 to the most important German writer alongside Goethe. The two years during which the poet lived in the cultural city of Mannheim proved crucial for his further career path as a dramatist. The sensational debut performance of his first play „Die Räuber“ ("The Bandits") on 13th January 1782 in Mannheim's National Theatre was a milestone in German theatre history.
Mannheim still remains a cultural breeding ground for creative works today. This tradition is also a focal point of the activities arranged for the “Year of Schiller 2005” programme.
